Winch up, ten minutes, feet as wet as you ask for

A parasail flight lasts ten minutes. Choosing the boat takes longer.

What the weight limits really are, which bays fly in the afternoon wind, whether the crew will dip you, and what a tandem costs in Hurghada against Key West. Reviews of every parasailing flight you can book.

Where the canopies go up

Six bays that put a parasail in the air every day of the season.

Hurghada launches more canopies than anywhere else on the Red Sea. Punta Cana flies them off catamarans, Montego Bay off the sand, Bali off a shared pontoon at Tanjung Benoa. Six places to go up, and the best flight in each.

Flying in the States

Key West, Waikiki, Destin: where American parasailing actually happens.

Three coasts, three completely different flights. What it costs to get off the deck in each, and which one suits a family with a nervous ten-year-old.

Hurghada

In Hurghada the parasail boats run from breakfast to sunset.

★★★★★★★★★★4.0· 341 travellers on the busiest flight

The Red Sea barely keeps a season. Boats leave the resort jetties from first light, the water stays flat until early afternoon, and most operators will sell you the flight bundled with a banana boat and a snorkel stop for very little more.

Take-off

Off the sand, or off the deck

Beach or boat· 10–15 min up· dry landing optional

A beach launch runs you down the sand until the canopy takes your weight. A boat launch winches you straight off the transom, which is calmer, drier and the only option where the shore shelves away fast.

The half day

Add a reef stop and it stops being ten minutes

3–4 hours· reef stop included· mask supplied

The flight itself is short. Bolted onto a snorkel run over the house reef it becomes a morning, and hour for hour it is the cheapest thing moving on the water.

Who goes up

Tandem, triple, or on your own

1–3 fliers· combined weight limit· solo has a minimum too

Most boats fly two under one canopy and some will take three. Solo flights exist but carry a minimum weight as well as a maximum, which is why small children go up strapped to an adult.

Parasailing Experience in Waikiki, HI

Take a shared one-hour boat ride from Kewalo Basin and fly tandem or triple up to 1,000 feet above Waikiki. The crew handles first-timers with care, and guides such as Marty, Sundance, Kyle, and James are often praised for calm instructions and good humor. Photos and GoPro footage cost extra.

What you are really booking

Parasailing rarely comes alone: jet ski, banana boat, snorkel stop.

Ten minutes under a canopy is a short morning, so most operators sell the flight inside a watersports package. The combined ticket almost always costs less than the parts bought separately.

The price of ten minutes

What a parasail flight costs, from a beach ticket to a private boat.

Every flight on the site grouped by price. The short version: the canopy is cheap, and the boat underneath it is not.

Under $50

Beach take-offs, shared boats, and the ten-minute flight sold on its own.

$50–150

Longer lines, photo packages, and the flight bundled with snorkelling or a jet ski.

$150 and up

Private boats, whole-family charters and the combination days that run to lunch.

Mexico

Cancun, Cabo and Vallarta fly parasails off three different seas.

The Caribbean side launches off catamarans in the hotel zone, over water that turns from jade to navy in a hundred metres. Cabo flies the arch at Land’s End with the Pacific on one shoulder and the Sea of Cortez on the other. Vallarta puts the sierra behind you.

What stops a flight

Four things that decide whether the parasail goes up at all.

Parasailing is the most weather-dependent thing on a resort beach, and the harness rules are stricter than the listings admit. None of this appears on the booking page; all of it decides your morning.

  1. 01Wind, in both directionsToo little and the canopy will not lift; too much and the boat stays tied up. The call is made on the morning, not the night before, and most operators rebook rather than refund.
  2. 02Weight, top and bottomBoats fly to a combined limit for the harness, and to a minimum as well. Under the minimum you go up strapped to an adult, which is why the tandem is the standard flight.
  3. 03Whether you come back wetA dry take-off and landing happens on the deck. Ask for the dip and the driver slows on the descent until the water is up to your knees, then lifts you clean out again.
  4. 04Your phone stays on the boatNothing loose flies: no phones, no hats, no sunglasses on a cord. If you want the pictures you buy the crew’s, which is why so many tickets sell the photo package with the seat.
Only parasailing

Three things a parasail does that nothing else on the water does.

Jet skis go faster and diving goes deeper. Neither of them hangs you in silence three hundred feet above a reef with the engine noise left behind on the boat.

The winch

Take-off without leaving the deck

The line runs off a hydraulic winch bolted to the transom. You sit on the platform, the crew clips the harness onto the bar, the boat accelerates, and the deck simply drops away underneath you. Nobody runs and nobody jumps, and if you keep your feet up you land back on the same deck completely dry.

The dip

Being lowered into the sea on purpose

On the way down the driver eases off and the winch pays out until your legs, then your waist, go into the water, before the throttle lifts you clean out again. It is the part everyone films from the boat, and it is optional in both directions: ask for it, or ask them not to.

The quiet

Three hundred feet of almost nothing to hear

Under the canopy the engine is a long way below and downwind, and the harness stops swinging within seconds of the line running out. What is left is a rope, the wind, and a reef laid out flat underneath you like a chart. Ten minutes is longer than it sounds.

Asia and the Gulf

Bali, Boracay and Dubai fly parasails over the warmest water on the map.

Tanjung Benoa in Bali runs every watersport there is off one stretch of pontoon and charges accordingly, which is to say almost nothing. Boracay goes up over White Beach at the end of the afternoon. Dubai puts the Burj Al Arab in the frame and prices it like a landmark.

The pictures

Nobody takes their own photos on a parasail. Somebody else has to.

Nothing loose goes up, so the camera question is settled before you leave the jetty. Some boats mount a GoPro on the harness bar, some shoot from the deck with a long lens, and a few hand over the files before you are back on the sand. Worth asking which before you pay.
